The original MiMOMax demonstration platform was set up in the Tait Advanced Wireless Research Lab using high-level modulation techniques and a MiMO (Multiple In / Multiple Out) 4x4 antenna array at microwave frequencies. In a pure line-of-sight demonstration the performance was much as you would expect from a standard point to point communications system. However against conventional wisdom, as the system antennas were slowly turned away from each other creating a rich signal scattering environment, the signal throughput rapidly climbed to over 100Mb/s and the signal quality dramatically improved. Using about 4 Mhz of bandwidth spectrum MiMOMax/Tait had successfully demonstrated that 100Mb/s of data could be transmitted in less bandwidth than Marconi had originally used to transmit his single bit of information. MiMOMax had proved that MIMO Time Space Diversity in conjunction with very high power digital processing platforms has the potential to provide the next major leap forward in wireless communications throughput improvements.

It is perhaps a bit premature to compare the achievements of the MiMO development team with those of the pioneers that contributed to where we are today. However as signal-processing power continues to increase while reducing in cost, it is inevitable that MiMO and Space Time diversity techniques will become a part of future everyday wireless applications.
