The MiMOMax M-PoD feature is a unique power saving feature, which only turns on the remote end of a radio unit transmitter when there is "demand" for traffic (for example, when there is data ready to be transmitted between radio units (RU)). This feature is suited to remote substations that may be solar powered, have cascaded links, or where power consumption may be an issue.
The M-PoD feature was specifically designed for the spectrally efficient and ultra low latency MiMOMax Network Digital Link (NDL)*. The primary feature of the M-PoD is its ability to automatically and rapidly turn a RU transmitter on or off.
The M-PoD does this by promptly keying up (<100ms link establishment time) a RU transmitter from idle when there is data to send, to enable over the link data transmission.
The M-PoD feature responds to both digital (including IP, Synchronous and Asynchronous Serial) and analogue data, and will activate a RU transmitter if any of these forms of data is ready to be transmitted.
Once the data transmission is completed, the M-PoD ensures that the RU transmitter will stay active for a programmable time period between 1 and 255 seconds. During this time, the M-PoD confirms that all data is processed before automatically deactivating the RU transmitter. This prevents transmit de-activation between "overs", avoiding potential time (100ms link establishment) and power consumption, in the event of needing to transmit missed data. When a RU transmitter is not in use, it is on idle and the power consumption is reduced to less than 10 Watts (typically 8 Watts depending on options).
The M-PoD accommodates an alternative configuration option for networks which have cascaded low power links. This configuration ensures that when a link is keyed up, its proceeding link is simultaneously alerted. Therefore, by the time the data reaches the proceeding link, there is only an additional 20ms establishment time before that second link is ready to transmit data.
This configuration option reduces establishment time for cascaded RU transmitters by 80ms. It applies to all subsequent RU transmitters within a cascaded link, ensuring that each only incur an additional 20ms delay in activating from an idle state.
